What Is Backup Reserve and How Should I Set It?
Your backup reserve is the percentage of your battery's capacity that is held exclusively for power outages. This energy is never used for daily cycling — it stays locked and available only when the grid goes down.
Why It Matters
Think of your battery like a water tank. The backup reserve is the emergency supply at the bottom that you never touch during normal operation. When the grid fails, that's what keeps your lights on.
Recommended Settings
Venture Home recommends: 10-20% reserve
This corresponds to a depth of discharge of 80-90%, which is the sweet spot for most homeowners:
- Enough for emergencies: 10-20% of a typical home battery (13.5 kWh Powerwall or 10 kWh Enphase IQ Battery) provides 1-3 hours of backup for essential circuits
- Preserves daily savings: Leaving 80-90% available for daily cycling maximizes your energy bill reduction
- Extends battery life: Operating within this range reduces stress on battery cells
How to Adjust
Tesla Powerwall:
- Open Tesla App
- Tap your home energy system
- Go to Powerwall > Settings > Backup Reserve
- Move the slider to your preferred percentage
Enphase IQ Battery:
- Open Enphase App
- Tap Battery icon
- Go to Settings > Backup Reserve
- Adjust the slider
Common Mistakes
❌ Setting reserve to 50%+
- You're holding half your battery hostage for a hypothetical outage
- Dramatically reduces daily cycling and savings
- Only recommended if you live in an area with frequent, extended outages
❌ Setting reserve to 0%
- No backup protection at all
- When the grid fails, you have nothing
- Not recommended under any circumstances
✅ The 20% sweet spot
- Most customers find 20% provides adequate backup for typical outages (2-4 hours)
- Still leaves 80% for daily cycling and bill savings
- Can be temporarily increased to 100% when storms approach
During Storms
Both Tesla and Enphase offer automatic storm pre-charging (Storm Watch / Storm Guard). When enabled, your battery will charge to 100% before severe weather arrives, regardless of your normal reserve setting.
Quick Reference
| Reserve Setting | Typical Backup Duration* | Best For |
|---|---|---|
| 10% | 1-2 hours | Areas with stable grid, priority on savings |
| 20% | 2-4 hours | Recommended default - balanced approach |
| 50% | 6-10 hours | Areas with frequent outages |
| 100% | 12-24 hours | Storm mode or medical equipment needs |
*Duration depends on your backed-up loads and battery size
