How Do I Complete My REC Registration? I Got an Email — What Do I Do?

If you've received an email about registering your solar system for Renewable Energy Credits — or if you're wondering why you haven't received one yet — this article explains what's happening and what you need to do.


What the Email Is About

As part of your solar ownership benefits, your system is eligible to generate Renewable Energy Credits (RECs) for the clean energy it produces.

Venture Home handles the registration process on your behalf — you don't need to initiate anything or find the right registry yourself.

However, at a certain point in the registration process, we need a few things from you directly:

  • Identity verification
  • Account setup
  • Signature confirming your participation

That's what the email is asking you to do.

Who the Email Comes From

The email will come from the registry or program administrator for your state — not always from a Venture Home email address directly. This is normal.

The registries we work with:

Registry States Covered
NEPOOL-GIS Maine, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Rhode Island
PJM-GATS Maryland, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware

Massachusetts and Rhode Island customers may also receive a separate enrollment email related to the SMART or REG program through their utility.

If you received an email from one of these programs and weren't sure whether it was legitimate — it is. Complete your portion as soon as you can.


What You Need to Do

The specific steps vary slightly by state and program, but in general you'll be asked to:

  1. Create an account with the registry using your email address and the information provided
  2. Verify your identity and confirm your address and system details
  3. Sign or acknowledge the enrollment agreement

Time required: Typically less than 15 minutes

Once your portion is complete, Venture Home finalizes the registration on the back end and your system begins accruing credits.


Complete This Promptly

⚠️ Important: RECs accrue from the date your system is registered, not from the date your system was installed.

Delays in completing your registration mean:

  • Credits that could have been yours are not being earned
  • Lost revenue (in some cases)

In some programs, registration can be backdated — but not always, and not indefinitely.

💡 The sooner you complete it, the better.


I Haven't Received an Email Yet — What's the Status?

If your system has been live for a while and you haven't received a registration email, a few things may be happening:

Possible Reasons

  • Your registration is still being processed on our end and the email hasn't been triggered yet
  • The email went to your spam or junk folder — check there first
  • We may have an outdated email address on file for you

What to Do

We'll:

  • Look into the status of your registration
  • Resend the enrollment email if needed
  • Update your email address if it's incorrect

What Happens After I'm Registered?

Once your system is fully registered, it begins generating credits automatically based on your production data.

By State/Program

NEPOOL-GIS (ME, NH, MA, RI)

  • Credits accumulate in your registry account
  • Can be sold through an aggregator
  • Venture Home can help connect you with resources for selling your credits

PJM-GATS (MD, NJ, PA, DE)

  • Credits accumulate similarly
  • Can be sold through a broker or aggregator
  • SREC market values vary by state — New Jersey and Maryland tend to have the most active markets

Massachusetts SMART / Rhode Island REG

  • Payments flow directly through your utility bill as a per-kWh credit
  • Once enrolled, this happens automatically with no further action required
