Managing Your Enphase Battery: Settings, Modes, and Storm Guard

Managing Your Enphase Battery: Settings, Modes, and Storm Guard

Your Enphase battery is managed entirely through the Enphase App, available on iOS and Android. Everything from your backup reserve level to your operating mode to Storm Guard can be adjusted in a few taps.

Here's a walkthrough of the key settings and what they mean.

Finding Your Battery Settings

Open the Enphase App and:

  1. Tap the Battery icon or navigate to Devices > Battery
  2. You'll see your current state of charge, active operating mode, and quick access to settings
  3. To adjust configuration, tap Settings or the gear icon

Operating Modes

Enphase offers three primary operating modes. Your installer set a default at activation, but you can change this any time in the app.

Savings Mode ⭐ (Recommended for Most Customers)

This is the default mode for most Venture Home installations.

How it works:

  • Battery charges from solar during the day
  • Battery discharges to power your home in the evening and overnight
  • Reduces how much you draw from the grid
  • Backup reserve always protected — won't be used for daily cycling

Best for: Maximizing energy savings while keeping backup power available

Full Backup Mode

In Full Backup Mode, your battery prioritizes staying fully charged at all times.

How it works:

  • Solar and grid power both contribute to keeping battery topped up
  • Battery discharges only during grid outage
  • Maximum preparedness for outages

Trade-off: Reduces daily energy savings because battery isn't cycling regularly

Best for:

  • Extended periods of severe weather risk
  • Medical equipment or critical loads requiring reliable backup
  • Maximum peace of mind

Time of Use (TOU) / Peak Shaving Mode

If your utility has time-of-use rates — where electricity costs more during peak hours (typically evenings).

How it works:

  • Battery charges during off-peak hours (when power is cheaper)
  • Battery discharges during peak hours (when power is most expensive)
  • Takes advantage of rate differentials

Best for: Customers with significant utility rate differences between peak and off-peak

Check: Your utility rate schedule to determine if TOU mode makes sense

Backup Reserve

Your backup reserve is the percentage of battery capacity held exclusively for power outages.

Key point: This energy is never used for daily cycling — it stays locked until the grid goes down.

Recommended Setting

Venture Home recommends: 10% to 20%

This corresponds to a depth of discharge of 80–90%.

Why this range?

  • ✓ Enough energy for most outage scenarios
  • ✓ Still allows daily cycling for savings
  • ✓ Optimal balance for most customers

How to Adjust

  1. Go to Settings > Backup Reserve
  2. Use the slider to set your preferred percentage
  3. App shows estimated hours of backup capacity based on your home's typical usage

Setting Guidelines

Reserve Backup Duration Daily Savings Best For
10% 1-2 hours Maximum Stable grid, prioritize savings
20% 2-4 hours High Recommended balance
50% 6-10 hours Reduced Frequent outages
100% 12-24 hours Minimal Storm mode, medical needs

Too high (50%+):

  • Less battery available for daily use
  • Reduced savings
  • Only recommended for frequent outage areas

Too low (5%):

  • Very little backup capacity
  • Risk of empty battery during unexpected outage

Storm Guard

Storm Guard is one of the most valuable features in the Enphase App.

What It Does

When enabled, Storm Guard monitors weather forecasts in your area. If severe weather is detected — hurricanes, tropical storms, major nor'easters, or other significant events — your system will automatically pre-charge your battery to 100% before the storm arrives.

Even if that means drawing power from the grid to do so.

Why It Matters

When the storm hits and the grid goes down, you're starting from a full battery rather than whatever state of charge was left over from normal daily cycling.

Maximum backup power when you need it most.

How to Enable

  1. Go to Settings > Storm Guard
  2. Toggle it ON
  3. Set threshold for weather events (or use default)

Recommended Settings

We recommend leaving Storm Guard ON year-round because:

  • ✅ Only activates when warranted
  • ✅ No downside to having full battery before storm
  • ✅ Fully automatic — no action needed from you
  • ✅ Provides peace of mind during severe weather seasons
