What Is Storm Guard / Storm Watch?
Storm Guard (Enphase) and Storm Watch (Tesla) are automatic features that prepare your battery for severe weather. When a storm is forecasted for your area, your battery will pre-charge to 100% — ensuring you have maximum backup power when you need it most.
How It Works
- Weather Monitoring: Your battery system continuously monitors weather forecasts from national meteorological services
- Storm Detection: When severe weather (hurricane, blizzard, severe thunderstorm) is predicted for your area
- Auto Pre-Charge: Your battery charges to 100%, regardless of your normal backup reserve setting
- Full Backup: You're ready for extended outages with maximum capacity
What Triggers Storm Mode?
Storm Watch/Guard typically activates for:
- Hurricanes and tropical storms
- Severe thunderstorms
- Tornado warnings
- Winter storms and blizzards
- High wind warnings
Note: Normal rain or minor weather events typically won't trigger it.
How to Enable
Tesla Powerwall:
- Open Tesla App
- Tap your home energy system
- Go to Powerwall > Settings
- Toggle Storm Watch ON
Enphase IQ Battery:
- Open Enphase App
- Tap Battery
- Go to Settings
- Toggle Storm Guard ON
What Happens During the Storm
- Your battery operates normally (discharging during outages, charging from solar)
- The 100% reserve stays active until the storm passes
- Once weather clears, your battery returns to your normal backup reserve setting
- No action needed from you — it's fully automatic
After the Storm
Your battery will:
- Return to your normal backup reserve setting
- Resume normal daily cycling
- Continue protecting you with your preferred reserve level
Troubleshooting
"Storm Watch didn't activate"
- Check that it's enabled in your app
- Verify your battery is connected to WiFi (needs internet for weather data)
- Not all weather events trigger it — only severe storms
"My battery didn't charge to 100%"
- Storm Watch charges from grid + solar; if it's cloudy and you have solar-only charging enabled, it may not reach 100%
- Check your app for any error messages
