Managing Your Tesla Powerwall: Settings, Modes, and Storm Watch

Managing Your Tesla Powerwall: Settings, Modes, and Storm Watch

Your Tesla Powerwall is managed through the Tesla App — the same app used for Tesla vehicles. Everything from your backup reserve to your operating mode to Storm Watch is accessible in a few taps.

Here's a guide to the key settings and what they mean for your home.

Finding Your Powerwall Settings

Open the Tesla App and:

  1. Tap on your home's energy system (appears alongside any Tesla vehicles on your account)
  2. Tap Powerwall to access your dashboard
  3. You'll see current state of charge, energy flow, and active settings
  4. Tap the settings gear to make configuration changes

Operating Modes

Tesla offers three primary operating modes, accessible under Powerwall > Settings > Operation.

Self-Powered Mode ⭐ (Recommended for Most Customers)

This is the standard mode for most Venture Home Tesla installations.

How it works:

  • Powerwall charges from solar during the day
  • Powers your home from battery in the evening and overnight
  • Minimizes grid usage
  • Backup reserve preserved — only drawn down during actual outage

Best for: Best balance of daily savings and backup readiness

Backup-Only Mode

In Backup-Only Mode, the Powerwall stays fully charged at all times and only discharges during a grid outage.

How it works:

  • Solar charges the battery
  • Excess solar exports to grid
  • Battery never discharges for daily use
  • Maximum preparedness for outages

Trade-off: Eliminates daily cycling benefit that reduces your electricity bill

Best for:

  • Periods of elevated outage risk
  • When reliable backup is your top priority

Time-Based Control (TOU Mode)

If your utility charges different rates at different times of day.

How it works:

  • Tesla app learns your rate schedule
  • Powerwall charges when electricity is cheapest
  • Powerwall discharges when electricity is most expensive
  • Automated optimization — no manual scheduling needed

Best for: Customers on time-of-use utility plans with meaningful peak/off-peak rate differentials

Backup Reserve

Your backup reserve is the minimum state of charge your Powerwall will maintain at all times, held exclusively for grid outages.

How it works:

  • During normal operation, battery cycles down to this floor and stops
  • Energy below this floor is preserved until grid fails
  • You can temporarily increase for storms

Recommended Setting

Venture Home recommends: 10–20%

This reflects a depth of discharge of 80–90%.

Why this range?

  • ✓ Meaningful backup capacity available at all times
  • ✓ Battery delivers daily energy savings
  • ✓ Optimal balance for most customers

How to Adjust

  1. Go to Powerwall > Settings > Backup Reserve
  2. Move the slider to your preferred percentage
  3. App displays estimated backup duration based on your home's average consumption

Storm Preparation

Temporarily increase to 100%:

  • Expecting a storm?
  • Manually increase reserve to 100%
  • System will charge up fully and hold there
  • Return to normal reserve after storm passes

Storm Watch

Storm Watch is Tesla's automatic weather-triggered pre-charging feature.

What It Does

When enabled, Storm Watch monitors the National Weather Service for severe weather alerts in your area.

If a qualifying event is issued:

  • Hurricanes
  • Nor'easters
  • Ice storms
  • Other significant grid-threatening events

→ Your Powerwall will automatically charge to 100% before the storm arrives

Draws from: Solar and grid as needed

Why It Matters

When the storm knocks out power, you're starting with a full battery rather than your typical daily cycling level.

Maximum backup power when you need it most.

How to Enable

  1. Go to Powerwall > Settings > Storm Watch
  2. Toggle it ON

Recommended Settings

We recommend keeping Storm Watch enabled year-round because:

  • ✅ Only activates when weather alert issued
  • ✅ Doesn't affect normal daily operation
  • ✅ Fully automatic — no action needed from you
  • ✅ Provides peace of mind during severe weather seasons
