Common Utility Concepts

Net Metering

Your system produces → Powers your home → Excess exports to grid → Earns credits → Credits offset future grid usage

Annual True-Up

When remaining credits are either:

  • Paid out at reduced rate (NJ, PA, MD, DC)
  • Expire (DE)
  • Carry forward (CT, MA, NY, RI)

Fixed Charges

Monthly fees ($10–$30) that cannot be offset by solar credits. You always pay these.

SRECs vs RECs

  • SREC = Solar Renewable Energy Certificate
  • REC = Renewable Energy Certificate (broader)
  • Earned per 1,000 kWh (1 MWh) produced
  • Sold to utilities to meet renewable requirements

Important Disclaimers
