Quick Reference: Winter Solar FAQ

My app shows zero production and there's snow on my panels — is my system broken?

Almost certainly not.

Snow-covered panels simply can't produce. Check again after the snow clears — if production doesn't resume within a day or two of clear panels, then contact us.

How do I know if my panels are clear but still not producing?

Open your monitoring app.

If panels are clear and you're seeing zero or very low production on a clear day, that's worth investigating.

Check for:

  • Error alerts in the app
  • [[system-troubleshooting|System Troubleshooting]] article

If no error is present and production is still zero: Contact our Customer Success team at 800-203-4158

Will snow damage my panels?

No.

Solar panels are engineered to handle significant snow loads. The structural racking is also designed to support the weight of accumulated snow.

Snow itself does not damage panels.

Is it worth cleaning my panels in winter?

For Snow

See [[solar-in-winter|Solar in Winter]] — let it clear naturally in most cases.

For General Dirt

Rain does most of the cleaning work throughout the year.

If needed:

  • Prolonged period without rain
  • Panels look visibly dirty
  • Gentle rinse with garden hose from ground

Avoid:

  • ❌ Pressure washers
  • ❌ Abrasive materials
  • ❌ Getting on the roof

I'm worried about snow coming off my roof onto my car. What should I do?

Contact our Customer Success team about snow guards.

We can assess your installation and add them if appropriate.

See [[snow-guards|Snow Guards: Protecting What's Below]] for details.
